Eight travelers lost their lives after gunmen ambushed the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway near Gbimsi, a community close to Walewale, opening fire on vehicles.
On Sunday, armed assailants set up roadblocks in both Gbimsi and Walewale, stopping vehicles to identify potential targets.
Passengers caught in the blockade faced intense questioning over their identities. In the ensuing violence, approximately eight people were killed, and two vehicles were set ablaze, raising serious security concerns.
A survivor recounted the terrifying ordeal, saying, “I was traveling from Sunyani to Paga. Upon reaching Walewale, roadblocks had been set up, and people were being targeted. The attack went on for over an hour, yet security forces did not intervene.”
This attack is believed to be connected to the ongoing Bawku Conflict, which has escalated after a period of relative calm.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has assured travelers of an increased security presence along the highway in the coming days.
In a statement, the Police Service confirmed that they are working to bring stability to Bawku, its surrounding areas, and along the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale highway.
Besides Police and Military deployment in Bawku and nearby regions, the Police noted there is also a joint Police-Military presence along the highway to ensure security and manage traffic.
“The security agencies wish to reassure the public of their commitment to maintaining peace, security, law, and order in Bawku and its environs,” the statement read.
