During a mini-rally in Agona Swedru, one person sustained gunshot wounds, and several others suffered minor injuries when a firearm was unexpectedly discharged into a crowd.
Reports indicate that supporters of Chris Arthur, a parliamentary candidate, were returning to Agona Swedru from a campaign launch in Otinkorang, a community in the Agona West area. On their way, they encountered supporters of the incumbent MP, Cynthia Morrison, who were also campaigning at Agona Nyankrom.
While passing through the crowd, a gun was discharged, injuring Haruna Rashid, Chris Arthur’s campaign team manager, who sustained gunshot wounds to the ribs.
According to Jibril Tanko, the NPP Agona West constituency chairman, Chris Arthur’s team was attacked without provocation by supporters of Cynthia Morrison. He recounted, “It is unfortunate we were attacked after our campaign tour with our parliamentary candidate at Otinkorang. Our MP, Cynthia Morrison, was also launching her campaign at Agona Nyankrom, and we had to pass through the crowd. The atmosphere was tense, and Cynthia Morrison’s supporters began attacking us.
“I even advised my parliamentary candidate against passing through the crowd, but the unfortunate incident occurred. A gun was fired, and the bullet struck Haruna Rashid, the campaign team manager for Chris Arthur. He has since been rushed to Accra for treatment.”
Tanko added that the incident has been reported to the police for investigation and expressed hope that the culprit would be brought to justice. “We are surprised by the actions of Cynthia Morrison’s campaign team, and we have lodged an official complaint with the police. We want the police to apprehend the individual responsible. Despite this setback, we remain committed to supporting Chris in his parliamentary bid.”
Other supporters injured in the incident were treated at the Agona Swedru Government Hospital.
